Fabric is one of the three elements of clothing. Fabrics can not only interpret the style and characteristics of clothing but also directly affect the color and shape of clothing.
I will briefly introduce the modeling characteristics of different materials and fabrics and their application in clothing design as follows.
Different types of fabrics
- Soft fabrics
Soft fabrics are generally light and thin, with good drapes, smooth styling lines, and natural stretching of clothing outlines. It mainly includes knitted fabrics and silk fabrics with a loose fabric structures and soft and thin linen fabrics.
Soft knitted fabrics often use for straight and concise shapes in clothing design to reflect the graceful curves of the human body.
Silk, linen and other fabrics often have loose and pleated shapes to express the flow of fabric lines
- Stiff (crisp) fabrics
Stiff fabric is a type of fabric that has a strong, rigid structure and does not easily bend or drape.
Some common examples of stiff fabrics include cotton poplin, taffeta, and canvas.
It is often used for garments and accessories that require a more structured shape, such as collars and cuffs on shirts, or certain types of hats, dress shirt and suits.
- Shiny fabrics
Shiny fabric is a type of fabric that has a glossy or lustrous surface.
It is often made from synthetic materials such as polyester, nylon, or satin, which have a smooth, glossy finish. Shiny fabrics are often used for clothing and accessories, such as evening gowns, blouses, and scarves, to add a touch of glamour or sophistication. Shiny fabrics can also be used for home furnishings, such as curtains and upholstery, to add a touch of luxury or elegance to a room.

- Silk fabric

- Leather fabric

Its advantage is light and warm, graceful and luxurious. Its disadvantage is that it is expensive and has high requirements for storage and care.
- Polyester fabric

- Triblend fabric

Typically, triblend fabrics are made by combining cotton, polyester, and rayon, which results in a fabric that has the breathability and softness of cotton, the moisture-wicking ability of polyester, and the drape and smoothness of rayon. Some triblend fabrics may also contain spandex or elastane, which gives them added stretch and flexibility.
- Lycra
Lycra is a brand of spandex, which is a synthetic fiber that is known for its exceptional elasticity.
It is commonly used in clothing to add stretch and flexibility and is often blended with other fabrics to create garments that fit snugly and comfortably.
In addition to its use in clothing, Lycra is also used in a variety of other products, such as swimwear, sports equipment, and medical devices. It is known for its ability to stretch up to 500% without breaking, and for its ability to return to its original shape after being stretched.
- Oxford Textile
