What is a Clothing Tech Pack?
A Clothing Tech Pack is a document that outlines a custom clothing order’s specific details and specifications. It is normally created by your garment designer and you need to send it to the clothing supplier to ensure that everyone is on the same page regarding what is being made and how it should look.
It includes:
- Apparel drawing or mockup
- A description of the garment
- The fabric type and composition
- Garment measurements
- Construction details
- Printing or embroidery instructions
- Packaging requirements
Having a Garment Tech Pack is essential when working with a custom clothing manufacturer. It will help ensure that your garments are made to your exact specifications.
The 8 Reasons You Need A Garment Tech Pack.
The tech pack is the heart of your custom clothing manufacturing project. It ensures that both you and your manufacturer are on the same page. When working with a custom clothing manufacturer, having a tech pack can make all the difference.
Here are 8 reasons why you need one:
- It Saves Time
When you send your specs to the factory, they know exactly what to make and how to make it. This cuts down on the back and forth between you and the factory and saves time.
- It Ensures Accuracy
A well-made tech pack will ensure that your garments are made to your specifications. This means that there will be fewer mistakes, and you’ll end up with a product that you’re happy with.
- It Makes Communication Easy
A tech pack is a great way to communicate your vision to the factory. They can see exactly what you want, and they can make suggestions on how to achieve it best. This helps to avoid misunderstandings and makes the whole process much smoother.
- It Saves Money
In the long run, having an apparel tech pack will save you money. That’s because it will save you time and ensure accuracy, leading to fewer mistakes and less wasted material.
- It’s Professional
When you hand over a tech pack to your manufacturer, it shows that you mean business. It shows that you’re serious about getting the best possible product and willing to put in the work to make it happen.
At the same time, the factory will also take your order more seriously. Because a professional tech pack will make the factory think that you are a potential and competent customer.
- It’s a Sign of Respect
When you take the time to create a tech pack, you’re showing respect for your manufacturer. You’re acknowledging that they have the expertise to produce high-quality garments, and you’re giving them the information they need to do just that.
- It Builds Trust
A tech pack is a great way to build trust with your manufacturer. When you share your vision with them, and they understand it, it creates a foundation of faith that will make the whole process much smoother.
- It Gives You Peace of Mind
Knowing that your manufacturer has a good understanding of your vision gives you peace of mind. You can relax and let them do their job, confident that they’ll produce your expected high-quality garments.
Having a clothing tech pack is the best way to get the results you want.
How to Create a Clothing Tech Pack?
It can be helpful to create a tech pack template that you can use as a starting point for each new collection.
Cover Page
The Cover Page is the first page of your tech pack, and it should include:
- Your company name and logo
- The season and collection name
- The date
The Cover Page is where you will put all of your general contact information and the specific contact information for the person to whom this tech pack is going.
Inspiration Page
The Inspiration Page is where you will put any images or text that inspired this collection. This can be anything from runway looks, to art, to architecture, to a color palette. You want to give your manufacturer an idea of the overall feeling or theme of the collection.
Don’t underestimate this page, it gives the factory the best sense of your needs and the style of your clothing line before your sample garments come out.
Callouts Page
The Callouts Page is where you will put any details about the garments that are not easily conveyed in sketches or flat drawings.
This can be things like:
- Buttons and buttonholes
- Zippers and zipper pulls
- Trim
- Appliques
- Prints and Placement
You need to include a separate callouts page for each garment.
Logo or Graphic Placement Page
The Logo or Graphic Placement Page shows how the customized print or pattern will be laid out on the clothing.
This is especially important if you are working with a custom print or have specific requirements for how the fabric should be cut.
Again, you will need to include a separate logo/ graphic placement page for each garment.
Colorway Page
The Colorway Page is where you define the colors used in the design. The current tab layout has several regions for entering color information and grids that may be easily copied and pasted to generate additional data areas. Sections for the color name, color number, and color swatch are included in each hue region.
Most clothing manufacturers use Pantone Formula Guide Coated as a color reference. You can pick the colors from Pantone.com easily for free. If you want to see more accurate color. I would highly recommend you buy a color card from the Pantone website. So that you can avoid any color difference caused by different screens.
If the design is not going to be a single color, this page may also contain print colorways. A true-to-size printed copy with a color key may also/or instead be required to identify each color in print.
Bill of Materials Page
A Bill of Materials, or BOM, lists all materials used in the garment’s creation. The Fabric, Trims, Labels, and Packaging sections are included in this tab.
There are five categories of information that can be recognized in each part.
- The Placement: where the material will be used or in what position it will be sewn into the garment,
- Comments: extra resources are required to grasp the material’s usage.
- Material: fiber content, identification number, or substance the material is made of.
- and Color Numbers are the data types that can appear in each area.
Fold Page
The Fold Page is used when there is a unique way that the garment needs to be folded for packaging. This could be anything from a t-shirt being folded half lengthwise to a dress being folded in a certain way to minimize wrinkling. If there are no special folding instructions, this page can be left blank.
Label Placement Page
The Label Placement Page explains where all of the labels for the garment should be placed. And also the label size and material of the label. This includes care labels, size labels, content labels, and any other type of label that will be used on the garment.
Measurements Specs Page
The Measurement Specs Page is where all of the measurements for the garment are listed. This is important because it ensures that the manufacturer knows exactly how the garment should fit.
The chart contains 6 columns of information.
- The Point of Measure (POM) tells you how to measure each element of the design to ensure that the garment or handbag is suitable.
- The Description explains how and what should be measured in the POM code. It should be clear enough to convey exactly what and how the point must be measured. The term “high point of shoulder” (HPS) will pop up frequently. HPS is the most common reference for vertical measurements, so it should be stated in the
- The Requested specifies the actual measurements from which the garment or handbag should be made. If a measurement is unknown, it may be left blank, and a note was given to the factory so that they can determine it. The specification can then be measured and filled in during the first fit.
- The tolerance (+/-) shows how much a measurement may deviate from the specified measurement. During production, this number is critical so that the product’s specs are within an acceptable range of measurements.
- The Comments section is used to add essential information.
- The Graded Specs Page is used when the garment is available in various sizes. This page should list all of the different measurements for each size so that the factory knows how to grade the pattern.
